At MidValley Birthing Services we specialize in personalized maternity care for women looking to give birth outside of the hospital. We provide complete care for women throughout their pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period. This includes access to all routine laboratory testing such as blood work, genetic screening, ultrasound and other screening tests offered throughout pregnancy and the postpartum period. The prenatal care follows the routine prenatal schedule, consisting of visits once per month until 28 weeks, twice per month until 36 weeks, and weekly until the birth of your baby. Postpartum follow up includes home visits at 24 hours and 72 hours, and office visits at two weeks and six weeks. We provide routine newborn care during this time, and offer Vitamin K, eye prophylaxis and the newborn screening test. We also offer water birth, and are happy to serve clients seeking a VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean). As licensed midwives we are able to bill most insurance companies, including OHP.
What makes care with us different than routine obstetrical care? When you choose us as your care provider you will have 24/7 access to your midwife throughout your pregnancy and postpartum period. No triage nurse line, no after hours answering service, and no waiting hours hoping someone will return your call. Your prenatal visits last 45-60 minutes each, allowing ample time for all your questions and concerns to be addressed. The entire appointment is spent with your midwife, allowing you to build a trusting and personal relationship with the care provider who will be attending you in labor.
What happens if something goes wrong? Every expectant parent worries about their pregnancy, birth and newborn, and want a care provider who can reassure them when things are normal, and act quickly when things are not. Midwives are highly skilled in supporting normal physiological birth, and are trained to recognize situations that fall outside of those parameters and manage those situations quickly and safely. Both of our midwives hold both the national certification (Certified Professional Midwife) which is granted by the North American Registry of Midwives, and a state license (Licensed Direct-Entry Midwife) which is granted by the Oregon Health Licensing Authority. As licensed midwives we have access to oxygen and resuscitation equipment, a variety of prescription anti-hemorrhagic medications, IV equipment, numbing medication and suturing material. These things combined with personalized continuity of care, fewer interventions and our wide range of experiences makes for a safe and satisfying birth experience.
Research also supports the safety of out of hospital birth. A 2012 study that looked at the outcomes of 16,924 planned home births showed that 94% of those women had spontaneous vaginal births, 89.1% of those occuring at home. Only 4.5% of women required Pitocin or an epidural, and only 5.2% required a cesarean birth. 86% of newborns were still exclusively breastfed at six weeks. All of this was achieved without an increase in adverse outcomes. This and other studies show that home birth is not only safe, but highly beneficial for most women.
